CSI***** SPRUCE MEADOWS (2-5/7/2008)
Things continued to come together for Canadian Eric Lamaze today as he won both feature competitions on the opening day of the Spruce Meadows “North American” Tournament. The International Ring came back to life for the first time in three weeks with this evening’s $30,000 Aon Cup. Fans were treated to an amazing competition which featured Olympic, World Cup and Pan American athletes.
The 460 m course was designed by Werner Deeg (GER) and boasted 14 jumping efforts. The course
was attempted by 62 entries with twelve jumping their way into the jump off. Of those three are
members of the 2008 Canadian Olympic team, Mac Cone, Ian Millar and Eric Lamaze.
The first place position was earned by Eric Lamaze and his mare Narcotique de Muze II. Narcotique de Muze II may not be Lamaze’s premier horse but he credits her with her dependability. “She’s really a great horse. Everywhere I take her she is fantastic. She is really dependable and quick,” said Lamaze after his win. Ian Millar and his Olympic mount In Style finished in second, followed by Mac Cone and his Olympic steed Ole.

Lamaze’s winning ways didn’t end there. Riding his Olympic stallion Hickstead in the $30,000
Enerflex Cup, Lamaze proved why he is currently sitting number four on the FEI Rolex World
Rankings list. The Schomberg Ontario native rode his way into the jump off joining six others,
including Olympic teammate Ian Millar.
The jump-off course offered riders an interesting option, one jump through the devil’s dyke or a
slightly longer route and a jump over the planks. Lamaze took the longer option in the jump-off,
choosing the planks over the devil’s dyke. “I’ve never jumped a devil’s dyke with Hickstead. I didn’t
think this was the time to try. He’s always careful so I knew the planks would be safe,” explained
Lamaze. “I wasn’t planning on going fast, and then I realized I might be fast so I went with it,”
added the champion.
